Best Air Purifiers for Allergies (2026)

Pollen, dust mite allergen, pet dander and mold spores are all particles, and a HEPA filter is made for particles. Here are five picks, compared on what each maker publishes, and the one number to size them by. An air purifier does not treat allergies, and this page is not medical advice.

The One Metric That Matters for Allergies

CADR matched to your room size. Pollen, dust mite allergen, pet dander and mold spores are all particles, and a HEPA filter is made for particles. The question is whether the purifier moves enough air for your room.

Shopping for pollen season? The spring allergy air purifier guide has a pollen calendar by region and picks listed by pollen CADR.

The CADR Rule

AHAM's rule of thumb: the CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's floor area. The EPA sizing chart lists a minimum of 130 cfm for a 200 sq ft room and 195 cfm for 300 sq ft.

Common Questions

Do air purifiers help with allergies?+

They can take allergens out of the air that passes through the filter. The EPA says portable air cleaners can reduce indoor air pollution but cannot remove all pollutants. An air purifier does not treat allergies. For your symptoms, talk to your doctor.

What is the best air purifier for pollen?+

Pollen is a particle, and a HEPA filter is made for particles. So pick by size, not by special features. Match the pollen CADR to your room and keep windows closed on high pollen days.

What about pet dander?+

Pet dander is a particle, and a HEPA filter is made for particles. For a home where someone has asthma, the EPA says to use an air cleaner with a HEPA filter and to keep the pet out of that person's bedroom. For smells you need activated carbon as well. See our guide to air purifiers for pets.

How big a purifier do I need?+

AHAM's rule of thumb is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area. The EPA sizing chart lists a minimum of 130 cfm for 200 sq ft and 195 cfm for 300 sq ft, with an 8-foot ceiling.
