How to Calculate the CADR You Need

AHAM's rule of thumb is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area:

CADR needed = room sq ft × 0.67

Example: 300 sq ft bedroom → CADR of about 200. The EPA sizing chart lists 195 for that room and 325 for a 500 sq ft room.

Can an air purifier help with asthma triggers?+

It can take some triggers out of the air. The EPA lists dust mites, molds, pets and secondhand smoke among common indoor asthma triggers, and for pets it says to use an air cleaner with a HEPA filter. The EPA also says air cleaners can reduce indoor air pollution but cannot remove all pollutants. An air purifier does not treat asthma. Follow the plan your doctor gave you.

What CADR do I need?+

AHAM's rule of thumb is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area. The EPA sizing chart agrees: a minimum of 195 cfm for a 300 sq ft room and 325 cfm for 500 sq ft, with an 8-foot ceiling.

Can an air purifier make things worse?+

One that makes ozone can. The EPA says that when inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs, and that it may worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma. Do not buy an ozone generator. If a unit has an ionizer, check that you can switch it off.

Is HEPA or carbon more important?+

It depends on the trigger. Dust mites, mold spores and pet dander are particles, and a HEPA filter is made for particles. Gases need activated carbon. The EPA says carbon filters can work when they hold a large amount of carbon, and that the CADR number covers particles only.
