What VOCs Are and Where They Come From

VOCs are chemicals that turn into gas at room temperature. In a home they often come from new furniture, flooring, paint, glue and cleaning products. HEPA is made for particles. Carbon is made for gases. You need both for both kinds of pollution.

How Much Carbon Do You Actually Need?

No one gives a single number. The EPA says carbon filters can work when they hold a large amount of carbon. It also says the CADR rating is for particles only, so CADR tells you nothing about gases. So the best you can do is compare how much carbon each maker says is inside. They do not all say it the same way.

Do HEPA filters remove VOCs?+

No. A HEPA filter is made for particles. VOCs are gases. The EPA says the CADR number is for particles only. For gases you need a filter with activated carbon in it.

What air purifier is best for formaldehyde?+

Of the three makers here, only IQAir names formaldehyde. IQAir says the GC MultiGas XE removes smoke-related gases like benzene, acrolein and formaldehyde, and that it holds 12 lbs of activated carbon. That is IQAir's claim. We do not test products. No maker here gives a percentage for how much it removes.

How do I know if my air purifier is removing VOCs?+

Use a monitor that reads TVOC, which means total VOCs. The Airthings Wave Plus is one; Airthings lists TVOC among its sensors. Take a reading with the purifier off. Then take another after it has run on high for a while. If the number does not drop, the carbon may be used up or too small for the room.

Is activated carbon in air purifiers effective?+
