How Much CADR a Large Room Needs
The EPA's Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home has a sizing chart for an 8-foot ceiling. Here are its three biggest rows. AHAM gives a quick rule too: the CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's floor area.

Blueair lists the 211i Max at a smoke CADR of 435, the highest smoke figure on this page. It rates the unit for 674 sq ft at 4.8 air changes an hour. Blueair puts the particle and carbon filter at up to 9 months and lists it at $69.99.

Alen lists the 75i at a CADR of 375 CFM. It says the unit covers 2,800 sq ft every hour or 1,400 sq ft every 30 minutes. Alen calls the filter True HEPA. No AHAM CADR, so you cannot check it against the EPA chart
The EPA sizing chart stops at 600 sq ft, where it lists 390 cfm. Each row of that chart is 65 cfm per 100 sq ft. At that same rate, 1,000 sq ft works out to 650 cfm. That is our arithmetic, not an EPA row. AHAM's rule of thumb is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area, which for 1,000 sq ft is about 667 by our arithmetic. No single pick here reaches that, so a room that big needs two units.
Can one air purifier cover my whole house?+
No. A portable unit cleans the room it sits in. The EPA says to pick one with a CADR large enough for the room. For the whole house, the EPA says to use a furnace filter of at least MERV 13, or as high as your system allows.
Why do the room sizes look so different?+
Makers rate room size at different air change rates. Coway rates the Airmega 400 at 2 air changes an hour. Levoit and Blueair use 4.8. Alen says 1,400 sq ft every 30 minutes, which is 2 an hour. A rating at 2 an hour covers more floor than one at 4.8, so compare CADR first.
What is the quietest large-room air purifier here?+
By the makers' own figures, the Coway Airmega 400 is the quietest at its lowest setting, at 22 dB(A). The Alen BreatheSmart 75i has the lowest top figure, at 51 dBA. Makers do not all measure noise the same way. IQAir gives no decibel figure. We do not test products.
Does CADR cover smells and gases?+
No. The EPA says the CADR rating system is for particles only. It also says activated carbon works on gases when a large amount is used.
