No portable air purifier cleans a whole house. A portable unit cleans the room it sits in. For the whole house, the EPA points to your HVAC filter: at least MERV 13, or as high as your system allows. This guide covers HVAC options first, then the best portables for homes with no central HVAC. We do not test products. Every figure is from the maker or the EPA.

The EPA sizing chart asks for 65 cfm of CADR per 100 sq ft, with an 8-foot ceiling. The chart stops at 600 sq ft. The table below runs that same rate out to whole-home sizes. It is our arithmetic, not an EPA table. The last column divides by the Coway Airmega 400's smoke CADR of 328 and rounds up.

AprilAire says its 501 filter is MERV 10, and performs equal to MERV 15 when used in the 5000 and tested to the AHRI 680 standard. AprilAire lists capture of 89% of particles from 0.3 to 1.0 micron, 95% from 1.0 to 3.0 microns, and 98% from 3.0 to 10.0 microns. Upkeep is once a year: replace the filter and wipe the inside. There are no collector cells to wash.

The iWave-R mounts in the duct and puts ions into the air stream. iWave says it fits systems up to 6 tons (2,400 CFM), needs no upkeep and no parts for the life of the device, and is validated to meet UL 867 ozone limits. It has no filter. The EPA says ion generators do not remove gases or odors, and may do little against large particles such as pollen and house dust. The EPA also says ionizers were found less effective at removing particles than high efficiency filters, and that ion generators make ozone, a lung irritant, as a byproduct.

Alen lists the 75i at a CADR of 375 CFM and says it covers 1,400 sq ft every 30 minutes. Its Essential filter is $99 and lasts 12 to 15 months at 24/7 use, by Alen's figures. It has an ionizer, which Alen says can be switched off.
